The Canonical officially started development of Ubuntu 25.04 (Plucky Puffin), and last night released the first ISO images (Ubuntu 25.04 Daily Build) for testing by the general public and application developers.
The first daily releases of Ubuntu 25.04 are based on the previous version of Ubuntu, the Ubuntu 24.10, which was released on October 10. This means that Plucky Puffin ISOs will (initially) include the same core components and software versions as the Oracular Oriole release.
During the six-month development cycle, the Ubuntu 25.04 Daily Build ISOs will be updated with several new GNU/Linux packages and open source software, such as the GNOME 48 desktop environment, the Mesa 24.3 graphics stack, and the Linux 6.14 kernel.
We should expect to see GNU/Linux technologies such as GCC 15, GNU Binutils 2.44, Python 3.13, LLVM 20 and Go 1.24 by default. It's also worth mentioning that the Plucky Puffin version will be optimized for performance on AMD64 systems.
You can download the first ISO images of Ubuntu 25.04 from the official website. Daily builds of Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu and the rest of the official Ubuntu flavors are also available for download from here.
However, you should be aware that these are pre-release versions and may contain bugs. DO NOT install them on systems you use every day.
The final release of Ubuntu 25.04 (Plucky Puffin) is expected on April 17, 2025. Until then, you'll be able to try the beta version on March 27, as well as the Release Candidate (RC) version on April 10, 2025 .
