Canonical has published the codename for the upcoming Ubuntu 25.04 on its page Ubuntu Wiki Releases. This time it will be called Plucky Puffin. Canonical giving Ubuntu a last name along with a noun codename, where the noun is an endangered animal, dates back to the first release of Ubuntu, twenty years ago.
In the case of Ubuntu 25.04 Plucky is the adjective and means "having or showing decisive courage in the face of difficulties" and Puffin is the noun. The animal in question is a hole-nesting auk (seabird) of northern and arctic waters, with a large head and a huge brightly colored triangular beak.”
There are of course some exceptions to the rule of choosing an endangered animal, since Ubuntu 14.10 was called the Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 15.10 was called the Wily Werewolf, and Ubuntu 23.10 was called the Mantic Minotaur, and all of these creatures come from mythology.
Ubuntu 25.04 is expected to be released on April 17, 2025 and will be supported until January 2026. The short support is because it is not a long-term support release. LTS will come after April 2026 and will come with a standard five-year support, taking us into the new decade.
