Ubuntu 25.10 uses sudo-rs by default

Earlier this year, Canonical announced its plans to use sudo-rs as the default Rust-written sudo implementation for Ubuntu 25.10 along with Rust Coreutils and other Rust system components.

The goal of sudo-rs has been achieved as the newest daily ISOs of Ubuntu 25.10 now use this sudo implementation by default.

Canonical engineer Ravi Kant Sharma announced today that sudo-rs is now the default for Questing Quokka, the codename for Ubuntu 25.10.

"sudo-rs is the default sudo implementation in Ubuntu 25.10 and follows to address some issues that arose during testing. sudo-rs has also been integrated as part of the Ubuntu Minimal core system."

There is still some work to be completed, such as some integration testing, various bug fixes. So Ubuntu 26.10 will have only sudo-rs as the only sudo provider in Ubuntu. Achieving this goal for Ubuntu 25.10 is important to allow sufficient testing to be done before the official release of the LTS version of Ubuntu 26.04.
