Ubuntu 26.04 LTS contains 2 telemetry tools

Ubuntu 25.10 added Ubuntu Insights, a new hardware metrics reporting service that comes pre-installed alongside the distribution's existing Ubuntu Report telemetry tool. The latter is used by those upgrading to version 25.10, while the former is only used on new installations.

But with 26.04 LTS, having two metrics collection tools is starting to become annoying. Canonical aims to make Insights the default tool for all users, including those upgrading from an older version where consent was managed by Ubuntu Report (i.e., Ubuntu 24.04 LTS).

Of course, anything that adds telemetry makes users worry, and for those who don't know, Ubuntu added telemetry in 2018.

Data collection in Ubuntu is opt-in, anonymous, focuses on system specifications rather than personal data, and is processed in an aggregated format (e.g., 5% of installations use TPM-supported encryption, etc.).

Now Ubuntu Insights will communicate with the "mother" company once a month.

Canonical says this will give them “more consistent and up-to-date data” that will allow them to “react faster to trends.”

Insights will collect the same data as before (CPU, GPU, RAM, screen resolution, TPM, encryption status, etc.), as well as some newer data related to installation options, new technology features, etc.

Each report will be stored locally in a plain text JSON in ~/.cache/ubuntu-insights/, so you can open it and view it at any time. The first time you give your consent and a report is created, Ubuntu Insights shows you the content before it is sent.

If you don't want to give telemetry data, try another distribution that isn't based on Ubuntu. There's the Debian distribution, but also easy distributions based on Debian, like MX Linux . There's also my favorite distribution , Fedora , which is based on Red Hat.

All of these distributions (and many others) do not use telemetry.
