Canonical engineers have announced the fourth and final monthly snapshot of Ubuntu 26.04, ahead of next month's all-important beta release.
Ubuntu 26.04 Snapshot 4, like all other monthly snapshots, is not a release intended for mainstream use. It is a “consumable artifact” that allows the distribution’s engineers to improve and perfect a new operating system.
Compared to the January release (Snapshot 3), there are more "notable" elements, such as the Linux 6.19 kernel and beta elements of GNOME 50 (Mutter, Files, Settings), although the new Showtime video player is not included - but will come to the final release.
Announcing the release of Snapshot 4, Canonical's Utkarsh Gupta says that Ubuntu 26.04 has now reached a feature freeze, so he reminds testers to "...start fixing all the bugs you would like to see fixed for the final 26.04 LTS release."
As the Ubuntu 26.04 beta will be released in less than a month, on March 26, this will be the last monthly snapshot. Daily releases will continue until the final, stable release of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, which will be released on Thursday, April 23, 2026.
