In a statement, the Greek Police's Electronic Crime Prosecutor's Office informs about the existence of a virus spread through Facebook and also proposes precautionary measures by him.
More specifically, the user receives a message from another Facebook user, which contains an attached file, with different names at a time, which, with a seemingly interesting description, prompts the user to "open" it.
Typically, the attached file is called "Watch This !!! .vbs," and when executed, the virus is permanently installed on the system and is enabled to perform various illegal actions on the computer, unknowingly by the user, such as displaying advertisements, malware, etc.
Also, the virus uses the user's Facebook account to spread itself as a message to others users της συγκεκριμένης ιστοσελίδας κοινωνικής δικτύωσης.
In its announcement, the Electronic Crime Prosecution Directorate urges users who have received and executed the attached file to take the following actions:
- να ανανεώσουν το πρόγραμμα protectionς (antivirus) που διαθέτουν και να εκτελέσουν μία πλήρη σάρωση του συστήματος (full scan),
- if the scan does not detect / remove the malware, install another antivirus program,
- also in any case install and execute a specialized antimalware program,
- to completely and definitively remove the virus from the computer, store their files in a secure medium (external hard disk or other), and reinstall the computer's operating system,
- to change passwords on all the accounts they use (electronic post office, social media, e-banking, etc.).
At the same time, it is suggested that users take the following minimum steps to protect themselves from similar incidents in the future:
- be careful in storing and running attachments that have been downloaded even by well-known friends, and it is recommended to scan each of the antivirus programs before it is executed,
- to ensure that the computer's operating system is constantly updated in the latest releases,
- similarly, make sure that the antivirus system is constantly updated in the latest releases,
- to maintain journals copies of their data on a secure medium (external hard drive or other),
- periodically run a full scan with a dedicated anti-malware program.
