USB-C to charge all devices until December 28, 2024

Over the last year or so, we've been hearing about USB-C charging being pushed into more electronic devices in an effort to reduce e-waste. Such a proposal was first submitted by European Commission in September 2021, followed by the regulatory parties involved who agreed to the legislation in June 2022 and formally voted on it in October.

Now, the European (EU) has published the necessary documentation confirming the exact date from which this law will apply to enforce USB-C as the charging standard.

Most new electronic devices using wired charging solutions will have to adopt USB-C by December 28, 2024. In the same vein, EU member states have until December 28, 2023 to publish their regulations on enforcement of the EU directive.

We remind you that the law covers the following electronic devices:

Mobile phones
Tablets
Electronic readers
Headphones
Digital cameras
Handheld video game consoles
Portable speakers
Keyboards
Mice
Laptops (until April 28, 2026)

Devices using solutions charging stations are exempt from this law and are not affected.
