An update to Windows Defender (virus definition Update) released by Microsoft this week destroys Security Essentials and Windows Defender in Windows 7 and 8.1, according to reports.

Microsoft has acknowledged the problem and said it is pushing a new update to fix it. However, the company claims that only Windows 7 and above are affected Windows Server 2008, although there are many reports of and Appliances with Windows 8.1.
The company has not officially stated that the virus definition update is the fault, but the new version is 1.289.1588.0.
