Even if privacy isn't something you think about, there are a few other reasons you'll find a VPN or proxies useful. But to choose the right type of product for your needs, you should first understand the differences between the two and what they offer.
What is a VPN?
A virtual private network (VPN from virtual private network) allows you to browse the web privately and securely with a layer of encryption between you and the VPN provider. VPNs are often used to subscribe to services or apps that are geo-restricted to a specific location. For example you may need to change IP (VPN server) to stream TV shows. These restrictions are usually because a company doesn't have streaming rights in your country or simply hasn't expanded its service to your region yet.

What is a proxy?
On the other hand, proxies are much simpler. They can hide your IP address, but that's about it. Because proxies are not encrypted, your ISP and government can see all of your network traffic. Similarly, hackers can reveal your real location. On the other hand, proxies are usually free.

Should you use a VPN or a proxy?
For too many, the constant use of VPNs or proxies is unnecessary. However, this does not mean that you should never use any of these services. VPNs can be used when traveling, especially abroad, on public Wi-Fi networks, or if you need to access geo-locked content.
Proxies are one solution, but since they don't offer any kind of encryption they're probably not worth it for most people.
VPNs offer protection and work across your entire device as opposed to some proxy you can use for a small number of your apps.
There are some who see the latter as a negative, and others who see it as a positive. You might like the fact that a proxy can be isolated to a browser or some other application on your network.
It should be mentioned that proxies and VPNs are great options, however, most people probably gravitate towards VPNs simply because they offer encryption.
