Brazil has banned access to X and is threatening users with heavy fines

Brazil banned access to X (formerly Twitter) for refusing to comply with a ruling by the country's Supreme Court.

Brazil's Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes has ordered the country's internet service providers to block social media platform X.

The New York Times reports that the order comes after X's owner, Elon Musk, refused to appoint a legal representative in the country and comply with Moraes' order to close X accounts he deemed harmful to the democratic process.

The court order was published online by Brazilian news website Poder 360.

Brazilian telecommunications agency Anatel confirmed that received the court order and ISPs in the country have just 24 hours to comply with it.

Apple and Google have five days to remove App X from their stores, while Brazilians face hefty fines for overturning the ban.

Justice Moraes' order doesn't just block the country's access to X. It also makes it a crime to use the app even over a virtual private network (VPN). Anyone caught accessing X with a VPN could face a daily fine of 50.000 Brazilian Real (about €8.900).

Also, Judge Moraes on Thursday froze the Brazilian bank accounts of SpaceX's internet service provider Starlink in order to further pressure Musk to comply with the court order.

SpaceX, like X, is a private company majority owned by Musk, and X has $3 million in unpaid fines related to its case in the country.

Starlink expressed its disapproval and vowed to fight the decision. She even threatened to provide her services for free to clients in order to overturn the justice's decisions.

The legal battle between Justice Moraes and Musk has been raging for months. The judge of the Supreme Court is also the Supreme Electoral Court of Brazil. It monitors and issues orders to candidates to avoid spreading false information through the internet and social media channels.

Musk called Moraes' instructions to remove or freeze similar misinformation accounts from X as "censorship orders."

Brazilian users seem to be turning to Bluesky since they can't use X. Currently there is no evidence of an increase in registrations or movements on Mastodon (another decentralized platform) and Meta's Threads.
