Η Western Digital announced yesterday at Western Digital's What's Next event two new 22 TB CMR and 26 TB SMR hard drives with 10 platters and ePMR technology.
The company does not yet want the need to bring the magnetic enrollment with heat (HAMR). In fact, WD ups the ante with the technologies energy-assisted PMR (ePMR) and OptiNAND.
ePMR technology, quite simply, is a technique that allows more bits per inch to be added by applying an electrical current to the main pole of the recording head throughout the recording operation.
Η OptiNAND technology respectively integrates an iNAND Universal Flash Storage (UFS) flash drive (EFD) on rotating disk drives (platter). To be clear, OptiNAND is not temporary μνήμη flash, but a portion of flash memory used to store metadata.
In addition, Western Digital's new high-capacity drives are filled with helium (technology HeliumSeal) to reduce the friction of the moving parts. The main change common to both discs is the company's shift to 10-plates.
The 22 TB Ultrastar DC HC570 and 26 TB Ultrastar DC HC670 are currently being tested on cloud computers. For ordinary mortals the units will be available next quarter. Their prices are not known yet.
