Western Digital invests in data retention for 5.000 years

Western Digital made a strategic investment in German newly established company Cerabyte, a company developing a nearly indestructible data storage technology using ceramics.

The collaboration aims to accelerate the commercialization of Cerabyte's ceramic-on-glass material, which, according to the company, can retain data for up to 5.000 years.

Cerabyte recently demonstrated the durability of its technology by boiling storage devices in salt water and subjecting them to oven-level heat.

The company states that the ceramic storage is resistant to fire, moisture, UV light, radiation, corrosion, and electromagnetic radiation (EMP) blasts.

Beyond durability, Cerabyte aims to enable massive capacity increases as the industry moves toward what it calls the “Yottabyte era,” while also targeting storage costs below $1 per TB by 2030.
