The South Wales police arrested a drug dealer from a WhatsApp message that contained a photo of the dealer's hand holding several pills, according to a Publication of the BBC.
It is the first punishment in Wales based on fingerprints that just appeared in a photo.
Still, the photograph had only a small portion of the fingerprints of the suspect, which was not very useful for tracking it.
Later, police forensic scientists were able to analyze the findings to confirm that the identity of the suspect corresponded to the person arrested by the police.
According to Dave Thomas, a spokeswoman for the South Wales Police Science team, sentences in Wales based on fingerprints from a photo are possible due to the smartphones' camera improvement in recent years.
The images are quite detailed and can serve as elements for identifying people.
