Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization behind Wikipedia, is suing the National Security Agency (NSA) and the US Department of Justice over the NSA's mass surveillance programs.
Together with eight other organizations, such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International USA, it questions the usefulness of its spy- NSA.
Wikimedia states that its methods serviceinformation systems to record communications from their users and staff, infringe on their privacy and "threaten the intellectual freedom that is central to people's ability to create and understand knowledge."
Wikimedia believes that the NSA's practices violate the First Amendment to the US Constitution, which protects freedom of speech and association, as well as the Fourth Amendment prohibition against warrantless search, according to TNW.
Amnesty International USA had already filed a lawsuit at the US Supreme Court against National Intelligence Director James Clapper, who was rejected by 2013, for lack of data.
This time, Wikimedia believes that it has enough data. The mass follow-up revelations by Edward Snowden include a slide [PDF] from a classified NSA presentation on Wikipedia.
