Windows 10 20H2 update from ISO deletes files and settings

Reinstalling Windows 10 is an easy and effective way to resolve all operating system issues. Microsoft lets you refresh your Windows 10 installation with the Media Creation Tool or the Setup.exe file in the Windows 10 ISO.

If you do using the Media Creation Tool, Microsoft replaces the current operating system files with the new versions. This allows you to troubleshoot Windows 10 issues, broken features or apps, and even update issues. Note that an upgrade leaves user files intact.

The Windows 10 upgrade also retains the settings you made in Windows 10. So many installed applications and their data remain unchanged.

Unfortunately, after the release of the October 2020 Update of Windows 10, it is no longer possible to save your applications, settings, and files if you perform an ISO upgrade.

An error in the October 2020 Update activation package disables two options - Preserving personal files and applications and preserving personal files.

This means that you will only be able to choose the third one "Nothing". But if you choose “Nothing”, all your files and settings will be gone after installing Windows 10 20H2.

It should be noted that the Media Creation Tool works normally when you upgrade from the 2004 of Windows 10, but if you install the October 2020 Update (20H2) via Windows Update (with the activation pack), you will only see the “Nothing” option during an upgrade from an ISO and you will lose your files.

As you can see in the above , the Windows 10 installer says that the current version cannot retain user files and settings.

But let's see how you can fix the error temporarily until Microsoft releases an update that fixes the previous update….

Follow these steps:

  • Open Settings> Update & Security> Windows Update.
  • Click the "View Update History" button.
  • Click "Uninstall Updates".
  • Search for "KB4562830" update.
  • Select the package and click on "Uninstall"
  • Restart your system.

Then you can run the Media Creation Tool and you will be able to set the option that allows you to keep your files.
