Windows 10 build 18917: Microsoft released a new preview of Windows 10 containing Narrator, the new Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 (WSL) and many other enhancements. The update fixes Windows 10 build 18912 (released to Insiders on June 5) and raises the build number to 18917.
These builds come from the 20H1 package, which represents the Windows 10 update that will be released in the first half of next year.
Windows 10 is now being developed as a service, which means that new features are being developed on a regular basis. Microsoft has released seven major updates so far: November Update, Anniversary Update, Creators Update, Creators Fall Update, April 2018 Update, October 2018 Update, and lastly May 2019 Update.
The biggest addition to this version is undoubtedly WSL 2. WSL adds compatibility to run executable Linux files in a Windows environment.
Microsoft announced the development of the next version last month. The WSL 2 is based on a Linux 4.19 kernel that uses technology built for Azure. Because it uses a real Linux kernel, WSL 2 can run ELF64 Linux binaries on Windows. This changes the way Linux binaries interact with Windows and your computer hardware. WSL 2 even supports Linux Docker containers, so you no longer need VMs.
With this version, if the download speeds of your computer are low you can set this speed separately for downloads in the foreground. Although this option already exists in Pro versions that use group policy settings or MDM policies, they are now available on the settings page (Settings - Update & Security - View Optimization - Advanced Options).
The Narrator application continues to improve. The narrator now reads the headers first, and then the cell data.
If you want to download ISOs without being registered with Windows Insider, you can do so from Wzor page.
