New release from Microsoft for Windows Insiders. The company has released the preview version of Windows 10 Build 18945 (20H1) for Fast Ring Insiders.
The company states that if you are one of the few Insiders who downloaded and installed the "wrong" version Build 18947 earlier this week, you will need to revert to the previous version and then update to the current version for troubleshooting.
IMPORTANT: Like all early builds, these versions may contain bugs.
What's new in Windows 10 Build 18945
Microsoft says it's rolling out a new improved Cortana digital assistant for Windows 10 as a Beta for Windows Insiders located in the US. This n new edition features a brand new chat-like UI that will let you type in your queries except from saying them.
The new Cortana app will support most of the Cortana features that users enjoy on Windows, including: Bing answers, Assistant conversations, opening apps, managing lists, managing reminders, alarms, and timers. Also:
Cortana now supports light and dark themes in Windows.
Features a new, less annoying "Hey Cortana" query screen so it doesn't bother you while you work.
The new Cortana features new language models and improved performance making the application faster and more reliable than ever.
Like Beta, the company plans to add more updates to Cortana from the Microsoft Store.
Build 18945: Improvements to the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)
With the upcoming release you will be able to connect to WSL 2 Linux networking applications using localhost. For example, the image below shows starting a NodeJS server on a WSL 2 hub and then connecting it to the Edge browser with localhost.
In addition, the company mentions the addition of global configuration options for WSL. These are the options that will apply to each distribution in your WSL and will allow you to set options related to WSL 2 virtual machines (VMs), as all distributions in WSL 2 are running inside the same VM.
But the most exciting option in this version (Windows 10 Build 18945) is that you can now define a custom Linux kernel!
