Windows 10 ESU expires in 8 months, but users don't want Windows 11

Windows 11 market share isn't growing, and that's worrying because Windows 10 extended support expires in eight months. In Germany, 48%, or about 21 million devices, are still using Windows 10. And we're not talking about businesses, as these numbers only represent private consumers.

Windows 10 support officially ended on October 14, 2025, unless you subscribe to Extended Security Updates (ESU). With ESU, you can still get security updates and minor fixes or improvements, but the problem is that extended support ends on October 13, 2026. After October 13, 2026, you'll either have to abandon your PC or upgrade to Windows 11.

Now, according to cybersecurity firm ESET, 21 million computers (48%) in Germany are running Windows 10 at home. That number doesn't include businesses, which prefer to stay on Windows 10 as ESU support ends in less than eight months.

In Germany, Windows 10 had around 24 million installations in August 2025, while Windows 11 had around 17 million during the same period. So, around 3,6-3,7 million computers were upgraded during this period, and it seems that the majority of this transition was from Windows 10 to Windows 11.

“Microsoft’s current operating system is on approximately 49,5 percent (21,5 million) of desktop and laptop computers, an increase of approximately 3,6 million compared to August 2025,” ESET reports.

“Older Windows,” which includes XP and 7, fell to 840.000 units in 2026, which means it was around 1 million in August 2025.

“Germany is struggling with the change. Windows 10 remains extremely popular among Germans compared to other countries worldwide. Official support ended in October 2025. Anyone who delays the transition further or does not upgrade to extended support is walking a tightrope,” says Alexander Opel, IT security specialist at ESET.
