Windows 10 KB4556799: cause audio problems, data loss

Windows 10 KB4556799 is another update that has proven problematic for some users. KB4556799, which is an important security update, causes audio problems and temporary data loss. See how to fix the errors.

We know you've heard the same story in almost every new Windows update. Problems immediately after installing the update, slowly the great news.

But we have to report it every time it happens: Users running the Windows 10 May 2019 update and the November 2019 update report that update KB4556799 is problematic with a wide range of failures such as damaged audio adapter, temporary user profile, blue screen and even a non-informative error message during the installation process.

These problems seem to vary from person to person and do not affect every Windows 10 installation with user reports, Windows 10 resets all audio driver configurations and even remove the Realtek audio driver. Others noted that their audio devices did not transmit audio during the installation of the update.

How to solve audio problems after update KB4556799
If you experience sound problems after the update, follow these steps:

1. Right-click the volume icon on the taskbar.
2. Open the toy audio settings.
3. Click on the "Sound Control Panel" in the Settings.
4. On the Playback tab, right-click the Realtek speakers to open the Properties dialog box.
5. On the Advanced tab, turn off the “Audio enhancements” option.
6. Click "OK" to apply the changes.

Windows 10 comes with a new Start menu

You may also need to turn off all audio enhancements for other audio devices.

Changing the sound settings of Windows 10 so that the quality is 16-bit could also solve some of the problems.

If none of the above work for you, you should cancel the update completely and pause the automatic updates until a new, more accurate update is available. This can be accomplished by going to the Update and Security page in Settings, and from there to Advanced Options.

Temporary user profile (data loss)
Audio problems are not the only problem with the KB4556799 update, with some people claiming that the update has been deleted their data and files, and that their images or documents are missing.

It is worrying that data is suddenly missing and all operating system settings are set by default, but the good news is that profile and data, including desktop customizations, still exist.

Windows 10 loads a temporary user profile during the update installation process, instead of the regular user profile. As a result, users have noticed that their desktop customization, pinned taskbar applications, or files in folders such as Docs and Images have disappeared.

Just released: MATE 1.14 for Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS

The data, including files and images, is still there, but it belongs to the main user profile, and you will not see the folders when Windows 10 loads with a new temporary profile.

The temporary user profile issue has been reported several times in the forums and in the Feedback Center, but Microsoft has not officially documented the error. It is not clear how the updates enable the temporary user profile, but there is a solution that still works.

To fix the temporary user profile problem, restart the affected system six to eight times (!!! yes! So many times). This solution seems to have helped some users, but it may not work for everyone.

The most consistent option is to simply uninstall the update by following these steps:
1. Open Settings> Update & Security> View Update History
2. Click "Uninstall Updates"
3. Using the search box, search for the update package.
4. Check the update and right-click on it.
5. Click the "Uninstall" button.
6. Click "Yes" to confirm your decision.
7. Restart your computer when required.
