Microsoft 's next big update on Windows 10 began to circulate. Windows 10 May 2021 Update focuses on improving remote work, brings the ability to use multiple cams for Windows Hello.
The latter will be especially useful for Surface devices whose owners may want to connect a monitor to an additional webcam while working from home.
Here are the new features of the Windows 10 May 2021 Update (version 21H1):
- Media support for Windows Hello to set an external camera by default when there are external and internal cameras.
- Windows Defender Application Guard performance improvements, such as optimizing the script to open documents.
- Windows Policy Instrumentation (WMI) Group Policy Service (GPSVC) that updates performance improvements to support remote work.
Microsoft usually releases a major Windows 10 update in the spring, and a smaller one in the fall. The company seems to have reversed this plan for 2021, so the update that will probably be released in October will bring more changes.
The next big update will include new system icons, File Explorer enhancements and more will stop using the icons of the Windows 95 era.
Microsoft says it will bring broader visual changes to Windows 10, in a "sweeping visual rejuvenation of Windows." The October update will also fix the multi-screen app reordering issue, add the Xbox Auto HDR feature, and improve audio support via Bluetooth.
Today's May 2021 update is so small that you won't notice it's installing. Microsoft uses a special package activations, so the features are just hidden on your computer right now. This update simply enables them.
As always, the Windows 10 May 2021 update will be available in Windows Update, but if you haven't seen it yet, it's because Microsoft is releasing it gradually to ensure that there will be no compatibility issues.
