In this post on October 3, 2022, a Microsoft employee confirms that there may be a problem when copying large files from a remote computer to a Windows 11 computer or when copying files to a local drive. According to the article, the operations of files transferred over the SMB network protocol are affected.
According to comments by Ned Pyle, the bug is found in Windows 22 kernel version 2H11. The reason for the bug is the update KB5017389 released on September 30, 2022, which supposedly fixes many bugs. In the meantime, Microsoft has confirmed the issue in the Know Issues section of the English version of support article KB5017389:
Copy large multiple files gigabytes (GB) may take longer than expected to complete on Windows 11, version 22H2.
Microsoft assumes that consumers at home and users in small companies are probably not affected by this problem (since they don't transfer such large files).
According to Microsoft, the problem can be avoided by using robocopy and xcopy at the command line level. The reason is that these commands do not use the cache (buffered I/O) manager. Copy operations can be performed using the following commands
robocopy \\oneserver\oneshare c:\onefolder onefile.img /G
ή
xcopy \\oneserver\oneshare c:\onefolder /G
Of course you will need to change the source and destination paths.
Microsoft is currently working on a fix for this bug and plans to release it with one of the upcoming Windows 11 22H2 updates.
