Windows 11 24H2 upgrade block removed on Intel PCs

In 2024, after two and a half years, Microsoft removed a Windows upgrade block that prevented Windows 10 users from upgrading to Windows 11.

The problem caused systems to experience audio errors (with BSOD), and only affected Intel computers, as it was related to an incompatibility in Intel SST (Smart Sound Technology) drivers (not to be confused with Intel's Speed Select technology, which is also abbreviated as SST).

For those wondering, Intel SST is an integrated digital audio signal processor (DSP) or controller that is basically responsible for handling and processing audio signals in many modern Intel devices.

The problem also affected Windows 11 version 24H2 , and so Microsoft had placed a compatibility block on devices with 11th generation Intel Core processors.

Since then, these systems have been unable to upgrade to the 24H2 feature update, as Windows Update did not display it.

So after a year, Microsoft has finally removed this block, as the compatibility issue has now been resolved. This was the third block to be lifted this month, following those for a Dirac audio issue and another for a buggy Camera app.

To resolve the Intel SST error, the SST Audio Controller driver needs to be updated to a newer version, namely version 10.29.00.5714 or later, and 10.30.00.5714 or later. For most devices, the company says that updated drivers should be available via Windows Update. Therefore, affected users should check for updates manually to ensure that the latest drivers are installed.

Once a compatible driver is installed, Microsoft will automatically remove the block, although it may take up to 48 hours before you see Windows 11 24H2 available for installation.
