Windows 11 24H2 what happened to the 8,63 GB that cannot be deleted

Earlier this week, we reported on a bug that users who upgraded their PCs to Windows 11 version 24H2 were experiencing.

When they tried to delete 8,63 GB of upgrade data from their systems, they found that it was apparently impossible for them to do. The native Windows disk cleanup utility continues to report about 8,63 GB even after scanning and deleting the files.windows 11 b 24h2

Initially, many people suggested that Checkpoint's new update system might be to blame, but Microsoft has confirmed that this is not the case. The company says that this is a reporting error issue in Windows 11 24H2 and that the app is incorrectly showing this information as the files are actually being deleted.

The company says:

After using Windows Disk Cleanup, it may show an incorrect amount of disk space that can be freed up in the Windows Update Cleanup category.

Please note that this is a reporting error. When “Windows Update Cleanup” is selected and Disk Cleanup runs for the first time, some or all of the files in this category (for example, the 15 GB) are properly deleted and disk space is freed up as it should be. However, after this initial run, the tool may incorrectly report that space is taken up and ready for cleanup under the Windows Update Cleanup category. This inaccurate amount of disk space is reported even if the space has already been freed by the initial run.

The company says it is investigating the root cause of the problem and that a solution will be provided as soon as it is available.
