Microsoft automatically enables backup on corporate Windows devices if the policy is “Not Configured,” with administrators maintaining control through Intune or Group Policy.
The change only concerns backup, while devices within the EU are automatically exempted under the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
The company published a post on her blog to explain the new behavior in the application Windows Backup for Organizations.
For those who don't know, it's an official Microsoft application designed to help organizations and businesses backup and upgrade their operating systems. Over time, it has acquired some pretty useful features.

- The following changes will come with Windows 11 version 26H2
- Automatic Activation: The system automatically enables backups on corporate devices if the relevant policy is left at “Not Configured”.
- Administrator Control: Existing, explicit settings via Microsoft Intune or Group Policy will take precedence and will not be affected.
- For Copies Only: The automatic change concerns only the creation of backups, while the restore remains optional and requires configuration.
- Geographical Exceptions: Devices in European Union countries are excluded due to the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
- Timetable: The change is already being tested in Insider builds and is expected to be officially released in the fall of 2026.
