Windows 11 easier migration and transfer

In March 2023, Microsoft began testing a new Windows backup application. The application, while quite useful, has been criticized for various things, such as the forced installation, for example.

But alongside the backup app, Microsoft is also testing a new migration app. Some of the details about it were revealed earlier this year in an Insider build. Based on the available UI data, some Windows fans were able to create a rebuild of the app.

Curiously, traces of a “WindowsMigration” component were also found in April 2024, but at the time, Microsoft denied that such a thing existed and simply stated that it was a bug.

Related or not, we finally have more information about the migration tool. Now, with the latest Dev and Beta channel builds (Dev build, 26200.5600, Beta 26120.3964), more details have emerged about a new migration applet, which is located inside the Backup app.

X user and Windows friend, phantomofearth, revealed a new option in Windows 11 for transferring files and applications within the Backup application.

By launching the updated Windows Backup app, users can choose to “Back up this PC to OneDrive” or the newly added “Transfer files to a new PC” option over a network.

The new feature is designed to make it easy for users to move local files, settings, apps, credentials, and other data to a new computer once the two systems are connected. A simple password authentication is required to complete the pairing.
