The December 2024 Update of Windows 11 it makes the Start menu unresponsive while there are also isolated reports of BSODs. Some of you may be dealing with others errorsuch as performance issues, especially if you play games.
These problems come from updates KB5048667 for Windows 11 version 24H2 and KB5048685 for Windows 11 version 23H2.
The Windows 2024 December 11 Update is causing the Start menu to stop working, and there appear to be two separate issues.
On the company's Feedback Hub there is a post titled “KB5048667 breaks the Start menu search”. After installing the Windows 2024 11H24 December 2 Update, a user noticed that the Start menu search appears white even when using a dark Windows theme.
But there is a bigger problem. The Start menu just stops working.
After applying KB5048667 (24H2) or KB5048685 (23H), an unresponsive Start menu may appear in VDI sessions.
As confirmed by one Citrix document, which was detected for the first time since Windows Latest, an unresponsive Start menu when using Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) is a known issue and is being investigated. If you are one of the few people affected, you can update the registry:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\CtxUvi
In the path above, you will need to add StartMenuExper. to the UviProcessExcludes value and restart Windows 11. We recommend that you back up your registry before creating the new value.
While the Citrix bug mainly affects the businesses, there is a second bug that affects people who don't have software by Critix. Once again the Start menu is not responding.
The second Start menu not responding issue is probably related to an old package (.dll) called “MSVCP_140_APP.dll”. This package comes with Microsoft.VCLibs.140.00 (version 14.0.30704.0).
The Start menu stops working when Windows 11 detects that you have an older version of the MSVCP_140_APP.dll package. It removes StartMenuExperienceHost.exe and the Start menu stops working abruptly.
If you are affected, you can install Microsoft.VCLibs.140.00 manually. Of course, this should be installed automatically by Windows, but in case it isn't, it will fix your Start menu issues.
We recommend that you install the Microsoft.VCLibs.140.00 package using the Microsoft Visual C++ UWP Desktop Runtime Package which contains it from official Microsoft Download Center. You can also uninstall older versions of Microsoft.VCLibs.140.00 using PowerShell commands like
Get-AppXPackage -Name Microsoft.VCLibs.140.00 -AllUsers | Remove-AppxPackage
In some cases, Windows 11 version 23H2 is also affected.
For example, in a post on the Feedback Hub, after installing “Update Cumulative 2024-12 for Windows 11 Version 23H2 for x64-based systems (KB5048685)”, a user noticed that the “Safely remove hardware and eject media” icon keeps showing “Realtec USB GbE Family Controller ” as a device for extraction.
This was not the case before the update. Additionally, one user reported that TCP resets and breaks the network connection.
There is even an isolated report of the screen being dim after installing Windows 11 23H2 KB5048685.
