Windows 11 "fresh install" is at least 10 years old

Last week, Microsoft released a new version of Windows 11 Canary with a new way to install it. As it turns out this installation process is anything but new.

If you have older versions of Windows, you can try the “new experience” by running setuphost /install /boot at the command line.

That way, everything looks like what Microsoft released on by default in build 26040. @XenoPanther on X showed the command using the famous 21996 builds that were leaked just before the official announcement of Windows 11. ge2ri2rweaauq s

It states:

21996 is the earliest build I have on my PC. But by running “setuphost /install /boot” you can bring up the modern Windows setup UI. I've heard this may work in early Windows 10 builds (Pre-WIP)

Windows Central, on the other hand, claims that you can see the same installation even the first versions of Windows since 2014.

There's no word on why Microsoft decided to enable a 10-year experience in the latest preview version of Windows 11, let alone the ad that mentions it as new.

In addition, the "redesign" looks nothing like the native design elements of Windows 11, but more like Windows 7 or Windows Vista, despite the fact that Microsoft "touts" the interface as "much cleaner and more modern".

However, we should mention that some features in the Canary channel may never be released to the public. Maybe the company will finally be able to fix the installer executable to look more like Windows 11 instead of Windows Vista.

  1. Nice stuff..Before we were crying about them not cooperating, now they are overdoing it.
Although in this particular issue it seems rather the desperate attempt of ms to gain ground from what monopoly of G.
    I'll try it too
