Windows 7 Extended Free Support for Some

It is known that Windows 7 will no longer have free security updates after January 2020. But Microsoft offers companies different ways to continue receiving updates after that date.

We learned yesterday that there is another option for Microsoft Windows 7 licensees that is available as a limited time offer.

Windows 7

Microsoft announced last September that it will offer, for a fee, support for Windows 7 business security updates until January 2023.

The company will no longer provide free security updates for Windows 7 after January 14, 2020.

At the time, Microsoft executives reported that paid Extended Security Updates (ESUs) for Windows 7 would be sold per device, with the price rising every year.

These ESU packages will be available to all Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Enterprise users and volume-licensing, Windows Software Assurance subscriptions and / or Windows 10 Enterprise or Education subscriptions will be discounted.

Office 365 ProPlus will continue to run on devices with Windows 7 security updates until January 2023.

Microsoft also offers customers Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD) on these Windows 7 ESUs at no extra charge for three years under WVD licensing fees. WVD is generally expected to be available from September 2019.

These Windows 7 ESUs are not cheap. For Windows Enterprise and Microsoft 365 users, Microsoft will provide ESUs as an "add-on". For the first year, the add-on costs $ 25 per device. The second year costs $ 50 per device and the third $ 100 per device.

For Windows 7 Pro users, the cost is $ 50 per device for the first year. $ 100 for the second and $ 200 for the third.
