Windows as a Service; Wrong is operating system

Τα Windows as a Service δεν λειτουργούν. Είναι προφανές: Τα Windows δεν είναι υπηρεσία και δεν ήταν ποτέ. Είναι ένα system and does not need updates every six months. Even iOS or Android only receive important updates once a year.

Microsoft last night posted on the blog an entire download of the quality of Windows 10, avoiding to explain what happened with the October 2018 Update. The company did not promise to change anything in the development process in the future. Her only real commitment was for more transparency and improved communication.Windows

The enormous scale of the Windows ecosystem

In fact, to justify the company, Reported that we need to look at "the enormous scale of the Windows ecosystem":

With Windows 10 alone, we work to deliver quality to over 700 million monthly active Windows 10 devices, over 35 million application titles with more than 175 million application versions, and 16 million unique hardware-driver combinations.

Yeah that's right. Windows exists on millions of computers and runs billions of applications. But that's also why Microsoft should slow down and stop updating Windows every six months. Not to use it as an excuse for constant mistakes.

And Windows 7 supports running on too many computers, with different hardware, and having too many applications installed. But Windows 7 is a version that works and does not change. Microsoft has provided hardware manufacturers and software developers with a stable version and all is well.

Updates of course are important. However, Microsoft managed to provide security updates to Windows 7 and earlier versions of Windows before “Windows as a service” and there were rarely any problems.

No one was asked about Windows as a service

No users have asked Microsoft to develop an operating system as a service. It was a Microsoft idea.

"Software as a service" is modern. These types of services are generally hosted on a remote platform, such as Amazon Web Services or even Microsoft Azure. Web applications such as Gmail and Facebook are services.

An operating system running on millions of different hardware configurations cannot be a service. It cannot be easily updated and there will be problems with hardware, drivers and installed applications with each update. The upgrade process is not instantaneous, it is a big download and may take a long time to install.

What will happen if the something went wrong in Gmail. In the worst case, Gmail will crash, but your computer will not crash. Millions of applications (or computers!) Could be shut down if Microsoft makes a mistake with Windows.

What do Windows give us as a service?

What has Windows given us as a service? How much have they improved since the first release?

Sure, Microsoft keeps adding new features like Timeline and Paint 3D, but how many Windows users are interested in them? Many of these new features, such as Paint 3D and Microsoft Edge updates, could be released without the need for a system upgrade.

Just take a look at the features of the October 2018 Update and ask yourself if all the adventures that this version had are worth.
Couldn't we wait another six months for Microsoft to better test this version before releasing it?

"Windows as a Service" gives us a few things. We have applications like Candy Crush pre-installed on our computers, but more and more built-in ads.

Windows does not need updates every six months

Microsoft you need to slow down. Why not release a new version of Windows once a year?

That's what Apple does, and Apple doesn't need "macOS as a service" to do it. Develop a new version of Windows every year, rename it and try it out a lot more to fix as many bugs as you can. Wait until it is stable to release it to the public. If not delay another month.

Make every version of Windows available as an optional free upgrade. Don't force your customers to upgrade all the time. Don't trick them into installing a new OS just because they clicked “Check for ". If the operating system is good, they will install it.

If the hardware or software they are using does not work properly with the new version, let your customers stay on their old operating system.

Microsoft support for Windows 7 will stop in about a year from now, on January 14, 2020.
After that, Windows 7 users will have to upgrade to a newer version of Windows or stay with Windows 7 but without security updates.

How many Windows 7 users are thinking of upgrading to Windows 10 but are afraid of upgrading? How many will remain in Windows 7 that will not be updated with security updates when it comes time to choose?

The sad thing is that Microsoft has a more stable version of Windows! If you use Windows 10 Enterprise, you can use a version of Windows for 30 months and receive security updates all year round.

But we should be the beta testers for real Microsoft customers, companies that pay for a good, stable operating system.
