The WordPress Desktop app was created by Automattic, a company founded by WordPress co-founder Matt Mullenweg. It is his development company JetPack and owner of the WordPress.com service.
The WordPress desktop application offers an enhanced user experience for pages using WordPress CMS. 
However, like all applications running it has its pros and cons.
Advantages
It offers a nice interface for managing your site
It syncs your content fast and provides a great writing experience

Disadvantages
Not working except connection. This means that you cannot write posts and simply save them to your computer using the desktop application.
It does not load custom fields created by plugins in the post editor. For example, if you use Yoast SEO, you will not be able to edit the SEO settings of the post.
It requires you to install JetPack and sign up for WordPress.com.
