Key updates shared in a new post on YouTube 's blog include:

• New parental controls for careful monitoring by teens: Parents with supervised accounts can now set a time limit for watching Shorts . Coming soon, the option to reset Shorts screen time , an industry-first feature, will give parents flexibility. For example, they can completely turn off the Shorts stream when they want their teen to focus on their studies. In addition, parents can now set personalized “Bedtime” or “Break” reminders right from the parental control dashboard.

• Easier family settings: A new sign-up process will make it easier for parents to create child accounts and switch between family profiles on the mobile app with just a few clicks. This ensures that every family member enjoys the right viewing experience, with content settings and recommendations that are age-appropriate and relevant to their interests.

• Facilitating the discovery of quality and meaningful content for teenagers: The YouTube introduces new authorities with the aim of guiding teenagers towards content that is appropriate for their age and offers substantial value. These principles were developed in collaboration with the Center for Scholars & Storytellers of UCLA, with the support of experts from the American Psychological Association (WATER) and Boston Children's Hospital. Now, they will guide the recommendation system of YouTube, to prioritize high-quality videos from creators in Greece and around the world.

Alongside the new high-quality principles for teens, YouTube unveiled a Creator Guide , which was developed in partnership with the streaming service's Youth and Families Advisory Board and supported by Save the Children International.

Professor Peter Fonagy , Head of the Department of Psychology and Language Sciences at UCL , said: “ The mental health of children and young people is a global concern and, in the digital age, the content that teenagers encounter online can have both positive and negative impacts. YouTube ’s Teen Quality Principles offer creators a practical, research-based guide to creating videos that are developmentally appropriate, emotionally safe and meaningfully supportive for young people. UCL was delighted to be involved in this project, contributing evidence-based knowledge around adolescent development so that creators understand their wider responsibility: to help teenagers thrive, while limiting potential harm .”
