The Shared Experiences service in Windows 10 and 11

In Windows 10 and 11 you can get access shared files using the native Shared Experiences service.

In 2018, Microsoft introduced a new feature called Shared Experiences or in English Share. Similar to Airdrop on iOS and macOS, Nearby Share on Windows 10 and Windows 11 allows files to be transferred wirelessly between two computers on the same network.

It's a great and somewhat underrated feature that will allow you to overcome both third-party drives as well as slow USB drives.

Now integrated into the operating system, Nearby Share ensures the best compatibility with almost any Windows device.

It's important to note that Nearby Share doesn't work on every Windows PC. The feature requires the computer to have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 and additionally Windows 10 version 1803 or later.

Although not necessary, make sure you have two computers on the same network. Otherwise, the Shared Experience will use Bluetooth at significantly lower transfer speeds.

Enable Nearby Sharing in Windows 10

  1. Turn on both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
  2. Next, open Windows Settings > System > Shared experiences.
  3. Turn on “Sharing with neighboring devices”.
  4. Also, check them out . You can set Nearby Sharing to only receive and send files to devices with your Microsoft account, or from everyone nearby. If you want to receive a file from a friend's computer, set this parameter to “Those near me”.

Advice: You don't need to open Windows Settings every time. Windows allows it and disable Neighbor Sharing from the control center. Press Win A, then tap Share Neighbors.

How to download a file over Wi-Fi

Make sure you've turned on Shared Experience and set up to receive files from everyone around you. Windows will show you a notification with the name of the file and the name of the sender. You can click on the option Save and Open to open the file immediately after downloading, or to Storage to save it to the default location or to Rejection for cancellation.

Change the default folder

Folder C:\Windows\Users\User\Downloads is the default location for any downloads and files received using Nearby Sharing.

You can change this location to any other folder. Here's how:

  1. Open Windows Settings using Win + I hotkey.
  2. Go to System > Shared Experiences.
  3. Find “Save files I get to” and click “Change”.
  4. Select a new folder and click “Choose Folder”.
  5. The change is complete.

Good Luck!
