A Zinnia in Space! Scott Kelly, he is the American astronaut who currently lives on the International Space Station (ISS)
During the weekend, Kelly sent a tweet containing a photo of a flower. The species (zinnia) was chosen because of the larger growth cycle and because it can help scientists understand how flowers can grow in microbiality.
Trent Smith, who is responsible for the Veggie program for the development of fresh food in space, said about Zinnia:
It is more sensitive to environmental parameters and the light. It has a longer growing period between 60 and 80 days. It is one of the most difficult plants to grow, so by growing the longest growing flower, it is a good precursor for future tomato plants.
Kelly began to grow Zinnias late last year, but he had problems after a few weeks. High humidity and low airflow caused plant problems.
Soon, mold began to form on their leaves. Kelly made some changes to Zinnias care plans.
She decided not to follow the instructions for watering the plants and started doing it as she would in her own garden. Soon, he had a Zinnia in bloom.
