Wikipedia new mode brings page previews

Wikipedia has added a useful new feature: page previews. The Wikimedia Foundation says it is "one of the biggest changes to Wikipedia in recent years" and provides readers with a pop-up window that lists some of the text of the article.

So reading any page on Wikipedia can turn into an endless journey that can take you to places you did not expect. This exploration can be a fun and informative adventure, but it can also distract you, especially if the article you click on is not really useful.

New page previews show an image and some suggestions that briefly describe the article when you hover your mouse over the link. So you can decide if you should click on the link or not. Clicking on the popup window will take you to that article, and if you move your mouse, it will disappear.

Wikimedia reports that it conducted extensive testing during development of the new feature and found that most they didn't turn it off. It also found that “each reader interacted with the content of more pages while navigating the site” and that overall page views dropped significantly.

This seems to mean that users find it useful from pop-ups, so they visit fewer pages.

The new feature seems to work in Greek version of the online encyclopedia.
