If you miss the icons of Windows 98 or just want to confuse your friends about your operating system, you can get and put Windows 98 icons on Windows 10.
Get the Windows 98 icons
For the full set of Windows 98 icons, visit this site. Scroll through the bar in the icon view window and click on the icon you want to use. It will be saved as a PNG image and you need to convert it to an ICO file.
To convert a PNG file to an ICO file there are many free proletterthe ones you can use. We suggest you XnView or ICO Convert.
Change icons in Windows 10
Once you have all the icons you want to replace in ICO format, it's time to change them. It will be done in two different stages because changing the icons for folders and files is different than changing the “this computer” and “recycle bin” icons.
This Computer, Recycle Bin, Network, User Folder
Open Settings and go to the Personalize group. Select the Themes tab and on the right you will see an option called "Desktop Icon Settings". Click the button and you will get the following window. Select the item you want to change, and then click Change Icon.
In the window that opens, select the icon you want to use. Make sure that if you use different icons for the Recycle Bin, put different icons for both the empty and the full bin. Click "Apply" and the icon will change. Make sure that the icon files are stored somewhere on your hard drive that you won't move them to.
Folders and files
To change icons for folders and files, go to one of them and right-click. Select Properties from the context menu. In the Properties window, select the Customize tab. Click the Change Icon button, and then select the Windows 98 Folder icon you want to use for that. Click Apply.
Repeat this for files and all other items for which you want to change the icon.
