Today, the European Union committed officially the 26GHz band for the upcoming ones services 5G throughout its territory, paving the way for the use of millimeter wave in Europe by the end of next year.
In the US, separate auctions were held for different millimeter wave spectrum in the 24GHz and 28GHz bands. The European Commission has chosen a wide range from 24.25 to 27.5GHz for the upcoming Appliances 5G – on a non-exclusive basis.
The similarity between the US and EU spectrum distribution should exist to allow manufacturers smartphone to easily develop and test globally compatible 5G devices with mileage support.
The European Union has already adopted two "pioneer zones" for the upcoming 5G. A low frequency at 700MHz and a middle band at 3.6GHz. The first to offer more slow but long-distance coverage of wireless signals, while the second covers shorter distances but is faster.
By comparison, the 26GHz band will have the shortest signal distance, but much faster speeds, a formula more useful for high-density / concentration urban areas.
The EU requires all its Member States to pass the necessary legislation to allow the use of the 26GHz band by 31 December 2020.
The 26GHz band is initially expected to be used for fixed 5G broadband services, faster 5G mobiles, augmented reality applications, and some industrial applications.
