Η International Open Access Week 2020 entitled "Open with Purpose: Taking Action to Build Structural Equity and Inclusion" will take place, as every year, in the last week of October (19-25 / 10/2020).
International Week is a global open access research event involving organizations and institutions from around the world, as well as individuals, and is organized by an international advisory committee. Established by SPARC (Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) – an international alliance to promote open access in research and the education- and its members in 2008.
This week is a continuation of the theme of 2018 (entitled "Designing Foundations for Open Knowledge") thus wanting to highlight for the third consecutive year how important action remains to promote justice and inclusion and the degree to which relevant actions should remain at the heart of the relevant initiatives.
Issues such as justice, integration and diversity must be a constant priority and component of the community: from how infrastructure is shaped, how discussions are organized to forms of governance, etc. In this context, International Open Access Week is a unique opportunity to promote relevant discussions, networking between and within communities to promote co-shaping actions and initiatives.
After all, openness is an important one tool to build fairer systems for sharing knowledge. At the same time, however, it is equally important for the global community to understand the barriers and exclusions created by existing structures and how specific issues are promoted. As the effort focuses on restructuring these structures, it is important that there is a commitment to move from discussions to concrete commitments to achieve substantial progress.
