To have separate processes for each File Explorer window, follow these steps:
- Search for and launch "File Explorer Options".
- In the dialog that appears, open the "View" tab.
- Enable choice “Εκκίνηση παραθύρων φακέλου σε ξεχωριστή διεργασία” (Launch folder windows in a separate to process).
- and click "Apply" and "OK" to confirm the change.
Applies to all versions of Windows 10
File Explorer, which runs through "explorer.exe", is one of the most commonly used components of Windows.
explorer.exe has two distinct roles: displaying some basic UI elements such as the taskbar and providing the graphics interfacefile management (graphical file management interface).
By default, both of these roles are fulfilled by a single process of “explorer.exe”. So in the event that one item encounters another problem, both Explorer functions crash. It may have happened to you when a File Explorer error results in the momentary loss of the taskbar and desktop icons. Windows then automatically restarts Explorer, restoring the desktop.
With the above steps you can isolate the two key components of Explorer, forcing the browser windows to run in separate processes.
Since version 1903 of Windows 10, this setting is said to be enabled by default. But in all the systems we have been looking for, it is not always. It is worth checking if it is enabled on your Windows 10 device.
Once enabled, File Explorer windows will open in their own process and an error will not affect the disappearance of the taskbar.
