An individual or group of hackers calling themselves The Impact Team claimed responsibility for the attack. In a manifesto they published along with the stolen data, they said they decided to release the user details in response to the lies of Avid Life Media (ALM is the company that owns the Ashley Madison social network) charging its customers $19 for the full deletion their profiles.

The team said:
Users almost always pay by credit card, and the details of their purchases are not deleted, as the company promises. The information includes the actual name and address, which is certainly the most important information that users want deleted.
ALM Managing Director Noel Biderman said the company is investigating the incident and added that it believes the hack comes from someone who had access to their networks.
