The US Department of Energy has announced plans to build a new supercomputer called Aurora. The new system will become the fastest computer in the United States and possibly around the world.

The Aurora system is programmed to operate 2018, while the Theta system will reach 2016 to support Argonne's transition from Mira to Aurora.
The main contractor of the contract is Intel Federal, a fully controlled subsidiary of Intel Corp.
Intel will work with Cray Inc. which has been proven expertise for supercomputing and HPC software stacks. the Aurora system will be based on a super computer next generation, with the code name “Shasta,” belonging to the Cray® XC™ series. Essentially, it will be the first system based on the Cray architecture of 'Shasta'
Intel announced at ComputerWorld that the next-generation super computer will use Intel Xeon, multi-socket web servers as well as Xeon Phi chips, up to 72 cores.
