Canonical: 12 years of support for Ubuntu LTS releases

Canonical, the company behind the popular Ubuntu operating system, he said a significant extension to the support lifecycle of long-term support (LTS from long-term support) releases.

The new add-on will be a paid Legacy Support for Ubuntu Pro subscribers and will provide additional security updates and support for 12 years, extending the previous support of 10 years.

This improvement will be available starting with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and will benefit both enterprises and individual users who need the stability and security of Ubuntu for their critical systems.

By default, Ubuntu LTS releases are supported for five years. However, with Ubuntu Pro, they are supported for 10 years for both the main and secondary repositories, offering access to a wider range of open source applications.

The Legacy Support add-on further extends this period by two additional years, ensuring that organizations can maintain their systems with the latest security updates and support services without the immediate need to upgrade to a newer version of the operating system.

This is of course particularly beneficial for large production systems where migrating to a new operating system can be a complex and risky endeavor due to the potential need to update the entire software stack.

Extended support includes ongoing vulnerability management for critical, high, and medium common vulnerabilities and CVEs in all software packages that come with Ubuntu.
