Microsoft is accused of censoring in China

greatfire-logo-bigBEIJING (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp denied today that it was skipping the display of websites on of Bing for Chinese users after a local internet rights and freedoms group alleged that the US company censors material the government deems politically sensitive.

GreatFire.org, from China, is a free speech advocacy group. In a statement on Tuesday, they said Bing was filtering the results τόσο στην αγγλική όσο και στη κινεζική γλώσσα. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, η Microsoft's search engine filters out terms like "Dalai Lama" the exiled spiritual leader of Tibet.

Microsoft, responding to the group's allegations, said a failure in the system had removed some search results for Chinese users. The company has previously had problems with censorship reports in its Chinese service Skype or Whatsapp.

"An error in our system has triggered an incorrect removal of results for certain search terms," said Stefan Weitz, Bing, chief executive officer, in an email to Reuters on Wednesday.

Weitz did not report whether the bug had been corrected.

Reuters reporters found that Bing had omitted several web pages that appeared in Google Inc.'s search engine when searching for "Dalai Lama" in Chinese from Singapore. English search results on both search engines were similar.

So they fear possible triggers of social unrest.

This censorship often means that foreign Internet companies must be moving very carefully to China in order to exploit the business opportunities of an enormous market. All Internet businesses operating in China should comply with the Government's demands that censorship considers a powerful ally.
