Three scientists, headed by Erin Biowells from Manitoba University, say that the so-called trolling on the Internet has many common features with sadism, psychopathy and Machiavellianism, the dark that is, side of the human personality. However, trolls are a minority of the minority on the Internet, since there are still few users who submit comments and among them there are very few who declared on online surveys of the University that they participate for the purpose of trolling. Also, the degree of correlation between these negative elements and trolling depends on the time the user spends by commenting on the Internet.
Most of the common features were found among the troll and the sadists - the sadists are screaming because they have a special pleasure laughing at the expense of others.

Εάν κάποιοι τσιμπήσουν, το troll εντείνει ακόμα περισσότερο την προσπάθειά του αφού το βρίσκει ιδιαίτερα διασκεδαστικό. Για αυτό συνηθίζεται να λέγεται στους νεότερους χρήστες "Don't feed the trolls" (μη δίνετε τροφή στα troll, σχολιάζοντας τα αποπροσανατολιστικά σχόλια τους).
