H United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) warned the Americans today of the new sophisticated ransomware the CryptoLockers.

CryptoLocker is malware that is distributed through emails that contain malicious attachments. Once they infect a device, they begin to encrypt some files and keep them so blackmailing for ransom.

This ransomware is capable of encrypting not only files from your local hard drive, but also your USB drives, shared network drives, and external hard drives. It can also infect storage in the cloud.
Of course, the worst you have to do if you are attacked by this malware is to try to clean your computer. Forget it, you will lose your time as it is impossible to decrypt the files.
Since there is no way to recover lost files without paying blacksmiths, the best thing to do is to take some steps to protect yourself before you happen. Recommendations from US-CERT recommend backing up on a regular basis. Always up-to-date operating and antivirus and avoid opening suspicious attachments that come with e-mail and links.
You should also make sure that firewalls and intrusion prevention systems are properly configured to detect any malicious activity.
