Cyberbullying is now one of the most widespread threats faced by children, which is even more sustained as rare victims and witnesses seek help. As reported in the initiative report Safe2Tell, students choose not to report incidents of school bullying, even though they know them, in 81% of cases.
According to ESET, the effects of cyberbullying can be reduced if children are better prepared for the online risks they may face.
For this reason, the cybersecurity company has gathered the basics points which must be emphasized by parents and teachers, so that students can deal with those who bully them online (cyberbullying).
Helping Children Become Proper Digital Citizens. The digital world is a part of real life, so the same rules should apply. When raising children, issues such as civic education, respect for diversity, ethics and values should also concern the digital world and not just real life.
Focus on awareness, not ban. Children are now so closely identified with technology that any form of prohibition can be effectively ineffective. It is preferable for parents and teachers to teach children how to use technology for the common good, such as to share knowledge or support one another. Instead of cultivating a sense of fear about using technology, it is preferable to emphasize how to use it correctly in a moral way.
Collective solidarity in reporting online bullying. In most cases children do not report incidents of intimidation, fearing that they will be punished, or if they are witnesses, that the next victims will be themselves. In these cases, children need to know that the problem is not technology, but the people who use it in the wrong ways. Open communication with parents and teachers helps children to know who to turn to if they are exposed to abusive behavior.
The importance of dialogue. Students need to know who to turn to for help before a problem arises, and in this area, trust is the key to starting a dialogue. Parent / teacher and child discussions about internet safety should start as soon as children start using the internet, and include such topics as technological risks, internet safety and appropriate online behavior.
The right example. Children imitate adults, so setting the right example on their part is very important. Responsible use of technology can be taught by parents and teachers themselves: we watch how we behave online, remember that any energy στο διαδίκτυο αφήνει ίχνη, ότι οτιδήποτε μοιραστεί ή δημοσιευτεί μπορεί ενδεχομένως να παραμείνει εκεί για πάντα και πόσο σημαντικό είναι να προστατεύουμε τα δεδομένα μας με σωστούς codeof access.
Social media. It is practically impossible for a parent or teacher to prohibit or restrict their use social media to children. It can, however, train them to be wary of the threats lurking on social media, being wary of people they don't know and the information they share, as well as interacting with acquaintances and peers. If the child faces bullying behavior, it is good to know that in all social media there is the possibility to report abusive profiles, without fear for their protection, as their anonymity is preserved.
