Debian is a wholly voluntary organization devoted to the development of free software and the promotion of the Free Software community.
The Debian project launched 1993, when Ian Murdock issued an open invitation to software developers to contribute to a complete and coherent distribution of software based on the then new Linux kernel. 
Αυτή η σχετικά μικρή ομάδα των ενθουσιασμένων και αφοσιωμένων ατόμων, που χρηματοδοτήθηκε αρχικά από το Free Software Foundation και επηρεάστηκε από τη φιλοσοφία του GNU project, αναπτύχθηκε με τα χρόνια σε έναν οργανισμό με περίπου 1062 προγραμματιστές του Debian.
Οι Developers του Debian εμπλέκονται σε διάφορες δραστηριότητες, μεταξύ άλλων την διαχείριση των Web και FTP δικτυακών τόπων, γραφικό σχεδιασμό, νομική analysis των αδειών λογισμικού, γράψιμο τεκμηρίωσης, και, φυσικά, την συντήρηση των πακέτων του λογισμικού.
Debian along with Arch and Fedora are my favorite distributions, the ones I use on a daily basis base. Για το Debian προτιμώ την σταθερή version, although I find testing much more stable than many other "fixed" distributions.
Debian has 3 different versions:
Stable: η τελευταία επίσημη έκδοση. Τα προγράμματα της έκδοσης σπανίως ανανεώνονται (εκτός από επείγουσες διορθώσεις ασφάλειας). Μετά το Debian 6.0, νέες εκδόσεις παρουσιάζονται κάθε δύο χρόνια. Όταν μια new edition είναι διαθέσιμη, η προηγούμενη σταθερή έκδοση γίνεται oldstable. Η έκδοση oldstable υποστηρίζεται έως 1 χρόνο μετά από την έκδοση της νέας σταθερής έκδοσης.
Testing (tested): η έκδοση αυτή περιλαμβάνει όλα τα πακέτα (προγράμματα) που δεν θεωρούνται ακόμα αρκετά σταθερά και χρειάζονται ακόμα έλεγχο. Αυτή η έκδοση δεν προορίζεται για χρήση σε διακομιστές (servers) ή όποιον υπολογιστή παρέχει κρίσιμες υπηρεσίες. Παρ'όλα αυτά πολλοί χρήστες την χρησιμοποιούν γιατί τα προγράμματα που περιέχει είναι πιο recently.
Unstable or sid (still in development): περιλαμβάνει τα πακέτα που είναι υπό ανάπτυξη. Η έκδοση αυτή πρέπει να θεωρείται πολύ ασταθής και usesται από έμπειρους χρήστες. Αν ένα πακέτο παραμείνει αρκετό χρονικό διάστημα στην έκδοση αυτή χωρίς να παρουσιάζει ιδιαίτερα προβλήματα, προστίθεται αυτόματα στην έκδοση testing.
There is finally one more version that bears the name experimental (experimental) which is used only to prepare the packages that will be added to the unstable.
Today I noticed a very good job that has been launched by the Greek Debian community.

The guide concerns the stable version of the operating system, but this does not mean it does not apply to the trial versions.
So if you are someone who has Linux, but only through Mint or Ubuntu, and you want to try Debian, this guide is for you.
If you are a novice user, try a distribution like Mint or Ubuntu.
