On August 16, 2018, the Debian Project celebrated its 25th anniversary since its founding by Ian Murdock. Ian 25 years ago announced the first Debian Linux Release, by sending an email to comp.os.linux.development.
The first email announced that he was working on a new distribution and was looking for suggestions. He called this distribution Debian Linux Release, and developed it from scratch, though inspired by Softlanding Linux system (SLS).
"When Ian Murdock announced 25 years ago at comp.os.linux.development," the imminent completion of the Debian Linux Release one would not expect it to become what is now known as the Debian Project, one of the largest and most strong free software projects ", Reported Ana Guerrero Lopez.
25 years later, the Debian GNU/Linux operating system is used by millions users worldwide and is supported on more than ten architectures. It is one of the most recognized and popular Linux operating systems for personal computers and servers. It is no coincidence that some of the most popular Linux operating systems are based on the distribution, such as Ubuntu, SparkyLinux, Kali, MX and many others.
The last version of Debian GNU/Linux 9.5 “Stretch” has been released in mid-July of 2018 and brought at least 100 security updates as well as 91 different fixes. The Debian GNU/Linux 9 “Stretch” series is the last stable version of the operating system that was released last year on June 17th and will be supported for the next three years until July 2020. After that, it will have an additional two years supports like Debian LTS.
Let's hope in Project Debian and all those involved good continuity in their work, and let's say we look forward to seeing the next big release of the distribution. Debian GNU / Linux 10 Buster is expected to be released in the middle of 2019.
The stable version of Debian is the one I use on my work computers. Of course I use and testing publications of the same distribution as, as I have stated from time to time, Debian testing versions are much more stable than others that are static.
