According to a recent IDC company report the operating system Windows Phone is expected to double its market share in the global market in the next three years.
In general, the research company believes that Microsoft's operating system will be significantly upgraded in the coming years, mainly due to the lower selling prices of devices with high-end technical characteristics but also of greater penetration in emerging markets.
The last report IDC predicts, however, an overall slowdown in smartphone shipments for the next few years. More specifically, 2014 billion devices are expected to be shipped in 1,3, a 26,3% increase over 2013. 2015 billion devices are expected to be shipped in 1,4, a 12,2% increase.
Looking ahead to 2018, IDC estimates that 1,9 billion smartphones will be shipped then, with annual growth of around 9,8%. The Androidis expected to retain the top spot, although serious doubts are being expressed about the effectiveness of Google's strategy.
That is, the distribution strategy for both forked versions of the operating system and low-edition versions in emerging markets through Android One. IDC believes that although this will bring significant leverage to emerging markets, it will create additional pressure on company-makers who will need to find additional ways to diversify their devices.
Also, IDC considers that Apple's strategy is more successful where, although its market shares are decreasing in several countries, thanks to its pricing policy they are constantly increasing income.
Overall, 2018 forecasts Android will have a market share of about 80% (from 82,3% to 2014), with Apple following 12,8% (versus 13,8 2014) and Windows gaining ground compared to today at 5,6 % (from 2,7%).
Of course, all of this is predictions and estimates based on current market data, so the future of the three operating systems may be significantly different.
