Distil Networks warns that the circulation of malicious bots is on the rise. The number of malicious bots in total web traffic has almost doubled since the first quarter of 2013 with the corresponding period of 2014 (from 12,25% to 23,6%). On the other hand, the percentage of harmless bots decreased from 27% to 19,4% over the same period.

The report also shows that most malicious bots are in the United States. Peak time of their traffic is recorded from 18: 00, to 21: 00 Eastern Time.

Disturbing is the fact, for over 1.100 ISPs and hosting providers, 70% or more of their overall traffic is represented by bad bots. 2013, the largest botnet, was Pushdo, which affected a total of 4,2 million IP addresses and almost as many computers.

The Distil Networks report also finds that of all businesses, financial services companies serve the highest rate of bad traffic.

In the mobile environment now, nine of the top ten global businesses are affected by malicious bots.

"The landscape for malicious bots is evolving rapidly, causing a variety of harms to everyone involved on the Internet, especially website owners. The amount of data from malicious bots will continue to grow for one simple reason - bots are an effective tool for many on the dark side of the Internet community. "The annual report presents important data from malicious bots and sheds light on some of the most widespread opinions about their origins," said its CEO. Distil Networks, Rami Essaid.

"For example, most of the malicious bots come from the United States. "The purpose of the Bad Bot Landscape Report is to provide an in-depth understanding of the origins of malicious bots and to help organizations properly prepare to mitigate this rapid acceleration of their security threat."

In addition to the report, Distil has developed a bot that is designed to check the date on which SSL certificates were issued. It's important because many companies were forced to reissue certificates due to the Heartbleed bug.
