Dropbox bought the German service encryptions Boxcryptor. New clients are no longer accepted and therefore the service should stop encrypting cloud uploads.
What is Boxcryptor?
Boxcryptor is a file encryption software and is especially used for cloud synchronization. First released on the Dropbox forum on August 5, 2011. After over 1.000 downloads in a weekteam, the developers thought of creating a startup. The software was then distributed by Secomba GmbH as a freemium solution to private users. The Companies they had to buy a subscription, but they were given extras possibilities, such as authentication two factors.
Dropbox buys Boxcryptor
On November 29, 2022, Secomba GmbH announced the sale of Boxcryptor to Dropbox. The American company Dropbox bought the technology and intellectual property of Boxcryptor, but not Secomba GmbH.
Dropbox's purchase target (according to company announcement) is to offer file encryption for paid contracts with business customers in the future.
Boxcryptor encryption service is no longer accepting new customers due to the sale. However, existing subscriptions will likely continue until they expire.
